The Center of Excellence in Fungal Research (CEFR) was established at Mae Fah Luang University (MFLU) with the aspiration to become a leading organization in Thailand and Asia, carrying out research, training and community development in key areas of fungi diversity and application. We have been studying on pathogenic fungi of plants or other organisms, with the co-operation of Chinag Rai Horticultural Research Center as well as with Beijing Academy of Forestry Sciences, China to identify the fungal diseases of economically important plants. |

The Center has brought together staff of Mae Fah Luang University and several Visiting Professors in coordinated research efforts. The staff includes microbiologists, molecular biologists, organic chemists, mycologists, plant pathologists, and post-harvest disease experts. The Center published more than 500 SCI research articles in 2016, successfully enrols more than six new PhD students each year and participates in community development projects using edible and other beneficial fungi. |

In turn the Center has enhanced the image of Mae Fah Luang University as a leading academic establishment in the region. The Center has filled an important void in fungal research in this part of the world as there is presently no other organization integrating these aspects of research and deliverables. |

Aims, goals, expectations and outcomes |

| |
- To act as a regional centre for identification of fungi throughout South East Asia, China and Australasia.
- To act as a regional centre for training of mycologists throughout South East Asia, China and Australasia.
- To house a regional herbarium and culture collection for the northern Thailand region.
- To act as a center for fungal biotechnology in the northern Thailand region.
- To act as a center of collaboration for research in fungal diversity, throughout the region and further afield.
- To act as a center for fungal molecular systematics in northern Thailand.

Expectations |

| |
- To establish a Center of Excellence in Fungal Research at Mae Fah Luang University to train future Thai mycologists and carry out cutting edge research.
- To become Thai and Asian leaders as well as a world leader in fungal research in a short period by collaborating with Thai and International scientists (Presently second in mycology in the world - based on SCI publications).
- To publish between more than 50 papers per year in SCI journals with the result of enhancing the reputation and visibility of MFLU.
- To bring funds and increase academic visibility to MFLU in terms of grants, MS and PhD scholarships, biotechnological patents, conferences, courses and workshops and publications.
- To act as a consultancy Center for fungal research in the Chiang Rai region.
- To develop research areas in plant pathology, biodiversity, fungal cultivation, phylogeny and biotechnology.
